Artist Wanted

The HRCC is currently looking for an artist/sculptor or team to create a sculptural entrance to the city. The first site to be undertaken will be the southern entrance from Melbourne and the Grampians. This city entrance is our main gateway for tourism and visitors to the city. This entranceway sculpture should be a welcoming signal to heighten arrival and share a connection or link in some way to Horsham and the Wimmera either visually, thematically or conceptually.

The Southern entrance has been defined to be on the Western Highway 5km East of Horsham.

The Project Brief can be downloaded here. or contact Greg Pritchard on 03 53820349

or through arts [at] hrcc.vic.gov.au

Expressions of Interest are due 25th February 2011.

Public Art

The Horsham Rural City Council has a Public Art Policy (download here) and is working towards creating exciting and interesting public art to enliven the town and its culture.

The policy is currently under review and we are surveying public opinion. If you would like to do a quick online survey click here, or if you’d like to download a copy to post or email it to us click here.

Most recently, Banyena sculptor Donal Molloy Drum completed the piece Aerial in Jos’ Lane. This is a beautiful piece that he worked with McKenzie Creek students to create. There is an elemnt of serendipity when one stumbles on it.

In March 2009 we launched Anton Hasell’s sculpture reinstalling the old Post Office Bell.

There are the wonderful Nichola Clarke Mural and Shadow Sculptures in Bradbury Lane. This was funded by the Department of Justice and involved local youth groups including Goolum Goolum, OnTrack, Nexus and Community VCAL.

Glenn Romanis’ Meeting Place of the Wimmera and Burnt Creek, a sculptural seating arrangement in Roberts Place has become a great place to sit with friends. Pictured is the Horsham Rural City 2008 Mayor, Pam Clarke.
